Jumbo Redefines Regional e-Commerce Trends

– Jumbo Electronics, the leading OmniChannel consumer electronics retailer in the UAE, has been differentiating itself by staying ahead of industry trends with www.jumbo.ae launched six months ago. 

The innovative online shopping portal, launched in November 2014, as an online extension of Jumbo’s brick-and-mortar network, showcases the brand’s definitive retail expertise in local markets. 

Shaping UAE consumer habits – defying historic e-commerce trends

Over the six-month period since its launch, www.jumbo.ae has witnessed a number of interesting trends in consumer preferences. Notably, 60% of total sales were paid online using debit and credit cards, as well as PayPal. This is in sharp contrast to the industry norm in the UAE. According to PayPal 80% of consumers prefer to pay using the less-efficient ‘Cash-on-Delivery’ option. Furthermore, Jumbo also witnessed a growing number of customers choosing their unique ‘Card-on-Delivery’ option, over cash, indicating a rising preference for cashless transactions. 

“Customer preference for prepayment on our site reduces the chance of goods being returned or refused at the door. This consequently saves us the cost of reverse logistics and the opportunity loss of sale,” says Nadeem Khanzadah, Head of OmniChannel Retail at Jumbo Group. 

“Many other retailers are trying to promote online payment precisely for this reason. The fact that Jumbo has actually achieved this is a testament to our strong brand equity. It also indicates consumer trust in our ability to deliver original products, warranty and prompt aftersales support. Furthermore, the ‘Card-on-Delivery’ service is one of Jumbo’s several unique differentiators that have accelerated consumer acceptance. A key take-away from this is that people are comfortable using their credit cards online with brands they trust,” he adds. 

Industry-first ‘Click & Collect’, with nation-wide store coverage sets benchmark for other retailers

Jumbo’s differentiation in the online space does not stop with pre-payment. In order to align its brick-and-mortar and online presence, Jumbo became the first electronics retailer in the Middle East to  successfully launch the ‘Click & Collect’ service across the entire store network six months ago. 

‘Click & Collect’ provides shoppers the option to collect the product within 5 hours at their chosen store location, across all the emirates in the UAE. This truly UAE-wide reach and convenience sets a new benchmark for other OmniChannel retailers in the region. 

Online payment simplified: 2-Click checkout, compared to competitors’ 7-Click checkout

One of the latest developments on www.jumbo.ae is a 2-Click checkout feature, which encourages the conversion of shopping carts to actual sales by reducing the time it takes to complete an online order. Khanzadah adds, “Jumbo’s 2-Click checkout format is another first in the UAE. Compare that with our competitors who often have a tedious checkout process, sometimes with as many as 7 clicks required. I cannot imagine a 7-click check-out being a user-friendly experience and this must surely result in abandoned shopping carts.” 

Other subtle yet significant enhancements in functionality have also been introduced for consumers to access what they require in as few clicks as possible.
